Where I work putting plants on display is our business, and yet tucked away in a corner of a building long since taken out of the public eye, is a collection of succulents which has been almost forgotten. Cacti and other succulents are fantastically architectural plants, sporting serrations, spines and hair. They are tough and forbidding because they live in harsh environments. And yet, once in a while the green and grey plants surprise us by producing spectacularly colourful flowerings - one day (or night) they are in full bloom and the rest of the year they sit apparently dormant.
